A private taxi is the quickest and most comfortable form of transport and the rates are quite reasonable when getting to/from the POP airport. If you are not coming with Ismael please make sure you confirm the rate with your driver before getting in. Carrying the correct amount of RD Pesos or US dollars will be helpful as some drivers do not carry change. If you prefer to take a Guagua (the public transport) the price should be around RD$100 (US$2) and travel time 30min. Guaguas drive through from Puerto Plata to Cabarete all day long. You must walk about 1 km out of the airport and to the main road. From here you need to cross the road and wait for a Guagua (mini van) or Carrito Publico (shared old taxi). All you must do is wave to vehicles approaching you and if they are either one of these forms of transport they’ll definitely stop to pick you up. There are no timetables for these vehicles so depending on the time of the day it can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 15 minutes before one arrives. If you take a Guagua they go right through to Cabarete. The journey time takes about 20-30 minutes but depends largely on the number of stops to drop off or pick up others along the route. If you take a Carrito Publico (shared taxi) you will have to switch vehicles in Sosua (a town towards Cabarete, just 10 minutes from the airport). Let the driver know you are getting off at “Encuentro - el Furgón - COCO NO PAN” and they will stop at this point.
